“Portrait head of a lady” by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769–1830)
An unfinished work let’s us into how an artist worked in his process and thought. In this portrait I would say that he like to get the likeness of sitter before he move on to finish the work. This may have been a study for a larger work.
English painter and collector. He was the finest portrait painter of his generation in Europe and the last English inheritor of the legacy of van Dyck. His technical facility and rapid and enormous public success should not obscure the originality and self-consciousness of his imagination.
